BIOTOP, the Japanese lifestyle and fashion retailer known for its considered approach to curation, has commissioned a custom version of Birkenstock's KYOTO silhouette — the first time the two have collaborated. It drops June 27th, with online pre-orders opening at BIOTOP's web store from June 5th.
The intervention is precise and purposeful. Where the standard KYOTO features suede lining on the footbed, BIOTOP has swapped in natural leather throughout — including the sides of the cork footbed typically left exposed. The result is a noticeably more refined object, elevated in material weight while retaining the silhouette's inherent ease.
The upper continues in suede, while the straps shift to a hi-shine leather that catches light with a polished, lacquered quality. The single colorway is black throughout, a tonal commitment that deepens the sense of luxury and keeps the design from feeling like a casual summer sandal despite its form.
For BIOTOP, the commission is consistent with the brand's broader practice of working closely with global heritage labels to produce distinctly Japanese refinements — less about aesthetics alone, and more about material integrity and the considered elevation of everyday objects.
